Some Useful Tips For The Aspiring Singer Songwriter

By Mark Long

A lot of musicians are great at performing but not the best of composers, and sometimes it is the other way around. No matter which of these skills you tend to favor, in order to become a singer songwriter, both of these skills must work together. It takes this synergy in order to succeed in this field because both the writing and performing fall on your shoulders.

A lot of the songs that we know and love have words in them, which we sometimes love to sing along to. This requires the person writing the songs to be able to put their feelings into words that captivate people. Writing poetry is a good way to improve this skill, and when paired with catchy melodies, is a great way to write songs.

The way that this genre got its start was way back when folk singers were entertaining people at bars and the like. It was a tradition of theirs to write songs about their experiences and they have long since grown into American legend. These were often performed on acoustic instruments like the piano or guitar.

It is important to have a high level of skill over your instrument and a good stage presence that you can command to entertain your audience. This is especially essential for these types of performers because more often than not, they are the only person on the stage. There are no other instruments to cover you up.

Even if you are setting off on this road alone without planning to seek the help of anybody else, it is still a good idea to have other people to help you out. Especially when you are playing the role of this kind of artist, it is very easy to get lost in yourself and not take care of all your responsibilities. That is why a manager is handy to have.

What you usually expect when you hear a musician like this perform or buy their CD is something that is rather personal and cuts right to the core of what it means to be a human being living in this physical world. A lot of times, these are hidden in metaphors and underlying messages. You can listen to these songs again and again.

Imagery is something that is used a lot in this genre. Anyone who has taken a language arts class can tell you right away what imagery is. For those of us who haven't been to school in a while, imagery is any form of language in which you are describing things that we experience through the senses. Including this in your lyrics is great for making an experience in your music.

There has never been a better time than now to protest issues that are deeply disturbing to our nation and humanity in general that are being thrown out on the daily by the Trump Administration. There have been great folk singers of our past who dedicated their music to issues they felt strongly about. The old names are Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie, but yours could be the next.
