Most activities and areas were affected and many alterations were made. While this had an effect on many departments, among the departments that were mostly affected is the immigration department. There were measures that were taken to scale down the population of individuals allowed into the United States. There was a huge number of individuals that were deported back to their native nations. This was done in an effort to eliminate the chances of such an event ever happening again in the future. The United States still ranks top among nations that give aliens permanent legal residence in the world.

Statistics indicate that the United States still accepts more than one million aliens into the country and gives them permanent residence in the country. At the same time, the country gives more visas to visitors than any other country around the world. The task of granting benefits to aliens and overseeing migration laws is charged to the Department of Homeland Security. The abbreviation DHS is often used in reference to this department.

In response to the events of the 9/11, the DHS was created and mandated with the role of making sure no more terrorism is staged in the US. What separates these attorneys from other kinds of lawyers is their knowledge of migration laws, the people they deal with, and the work they do. This is the reason as to why they should be hired when one has problems that relate to migration.

The academic requirements of becoming an immigration lawyer are the same as those of any other kind of lawyer. One needs two degrees at the minimum before they can start practicing. First, one must obtain an undergraduate degree in any field they want. Usually, this will take them a period of four years. This period could be longer or shorter depending on various factors.

The undergraduate degree is usually a major requirement for being admitted into law school. Law school lasts another four to five years, and graduates earn a Juris Doctor Law degree. During law school, one has to specialize in migration law. Here, they will cover courses such as statutory analysis, citizenship, employment, advising, and interviewing.

One should go on and pass the bar examination after they complete law school. One is given a license to be a full-fledged lawyer when they pass this examination. However, one has to have internship and experience before they can apply for work to increase chances of being hired.
