Around the year 1833, a Samurai by the name Kaji Tsunekich who lived in Nagoya in the province of Omwari started looking for a way to supplement the meager official salary. This Samurai took a piece of the ornament and examined how the artists from China were making it. Later, he was able to produce a little enamel dish.

By late 1850s, Kaji had become an expert in making objects and decorating them using this design. He later took on pupils and taught them the art. Due to his expertise, he was appointed the official maker and Warlord of the province of Omwari. The production of the decorative objects drastically increased. This intricate art became popular in the late 1850s and is still very popular today.

This made Nagoya and the surrounding areas to become famous due to their innovative techniques. These artisans could make beautiful objects that people could never have imagined possible. Later, many centers started designing ornamental items, which were awe-inspiring in many regions. With time, almost every province in Japan became manufacturers of the beautiful cloisonne items.

This beautiful art became so popular around the 1830s. From very small beginnings in Nagoya, it spread so fast across the country. In the early 19th century, this technique was a major revenue generating activity. More so, Japan started exporting these artifacts and became a major exporter to many countries in the world.
