How To Carry Out Electronic Equipment Storage

By Dorothy Perry

Electronics are sensitive. They have several individual parts and pieces and they need to be handled with care before storage. The condition in which electronics are stored can affect their future functionality. It is important to do several things as you plan to perform electronic equipment storage for the long term. This way, the items will not get ruined.

One of the steps to take is ensuring that you have the right storage solutions such as packing and moving supplies. Packing supplies may include sturdy cartons, bubble wrap, newsprint, packaging tape, markers and scissors. If the original storage boxes are available, you should use them since all the items will fit perfectly in the specially designed boxes.

As you plan to store electronics like computers, it is advisable to backup the data. This is a good way to be prepared if the hard drives malfunction after storing the gadgets for a long time. Electronic devices are not designed to remain without power or unused for months or years. For instance, components like hard drives can fail to function after remaining unused for a long time. Backing up the data and storing it online, in an external hard disk or other storage device will ensure that your data is secure and safe.

Most electronic devices have various pieces that make up the complementary components and the main device. Prior to storing the items, it is vital to separate the individual pieces and store them differently. It is also wise to separate the plugs from the electronics since you will not store them while plugged in. You should also remove the DVDs, game cartridges and CDs to keep them from sustaining damage over time or getting stuck in the drives.

Cleaning dirt and dust from electronics before you store them is also essential. Although a small amount of dust and dirt cannot damage electronics within a few days, it can cause problems if it is left in contact with the devices for several months. You should therefore wipe down all the surfaces you can reach to eliminate any contaminants from the electronics. You can also use a compressed air duster to clear out debris and dust from the hard to clean areas of electronics.

It is also important to cover monitors, screens and other items in canvas, cardboard, cotton or other materials that remain in good state during long term storage. If dust is present in the place you have kept your electronics, it will gather on these materials and not on the electronics. You should avoid covering electronic equipment in plastic as it can cause them to be vulnerable to moisture buildup over time.

If some of the items you want to store have batteries, make sure that you remove them. If you were to leave batteries in an electronic device, the battery container may get damaged. Furthermore, battery acid can potentially damage the electronics. It is also challenging to clean acid. Acid may also harm your skin as you clean it.

Keeping electronics in the correct environment is also important. Avoid storing electronics in places that are extremely windy, hot, cold or humid. Climate regulated storage units are the best for storing electronics for long periods. You can regulate the temperature and humidity levels your electronic gadgets are exposed to.
