Who Writes Enforcement Investigations Reports And What Goes Into Them

By Melissa Ross

If you're trying to decide what you're going to do with your life, and are a big fan of television crime dramas, you should think about the criminal investigation field. It may not make you rich, but it won't bore you to death either. You'll have a hand in putting away the bad guys and delivering justice to crime victims. You might work locally or investigate crimes on a national level. One of the biggest requirements of the job is attention to detail, the kind of detail that must be included in daily enforcement investigations reports.

If you follow crime series on television, you know something about an investigator's job. They have the responsibility of collecting evidence and then analyzing what they find in an attempt to learn what the methods and motives are behind a crime. They pinpoint the most likely suspects and establish what their relationships were with the intended victims. Many investigators end up specializing. They might handle gang related activity, homicide, or narcotics for instance.

This is not always a nine to five job. Crimes occur at all hours of the day and night. An investigator may have to leave at a moment's notice when he gets a call to come to a crime scene. Typically investigators are assigned to one case at a time. They work the case until it is solved or dropped. While they are working a case, they are required to write a daily report outlining the activities that took place in regard to the ongoing investigation.

Investigators don't necessarily work locally. A lot of them are involved in solving cases that end up in the national missing persons database. Investigators work closely with coroners and medical examiners trying to match information that has been entered into the database.

Some investigators work on cold cases. These are old, unsolved crimes. Because of modern technology, it is sometimes possible to match new DNA to these crimes in order to track down the perpetrators.

You will have to prepare before you can even apply for a job as an investigator. You must join a police force first. You can't do that until you are at least twenty-one and have graduated from high school. If you have an interest in working at the federal government level, you must first obtain a four year college degree.

You must be accepted into a police academy for specialized training. In order to be accepted you will be required to take a battery of written and physical tests. After you get through with your training, you will be able to apply to work on a police force. It will take several years before you have the experience necessary to apply for a job as an investigator.

This is a growing field. There is expected to be about a ten percent increase in the field by 2020. Those applicants most sought after are going to be the college graduates, those with military experience, and individuals who are multilingual. Salaries range from around sixty-three thousand to nearly $100,000.
