Making Your Own Personalized Wooden Signs

By Daniel Butler

Arts and crafts are simple to do nowadays. It only requires imagination and creative thinking. Your own two hands are able to create everyday items and even household ones. An example of doing it yourself project are personalized wooden signs.

The signs can be for any purpose you like. It may be for the family, for your friends, for a special loved one, or for yourself. Or, you may create one for any occasion and any season. It can be an ideal gift as well that have your personal signature in it.

If you are worried about the cost, it is not a cause for worry. Search for secondhand items or even unused ones in your house. Your project materials can be anything as long as it is still usable. You may also find trinkets which can serve as decorations if you like.

The first thing you need is wood. Look for one in your backyard or tool shed. If it is too big, you can cut it to the size you want. It also does not matter if the surface is rough because sandpapers can smooth it out. Sometimes, chipped side pieces can add to the design of the wood. So if you like, you may let these chips be.

You also need writing materials. Permanent markers are great. You may use them if you like. However, the aesthetics of your sign would be greater if you use brushes. You are able to see the stroke imprints of the brush as you write your piece. Pair it with artist or acrylic paints in order to dry the inks faster.

Think of something that you like to write on it. The phrase can be as long as you want. Your write up may be something in relation to your family such as family motto or the meaning of your family name. Your favorite phrases and quotes may serve as well. If the purpose is as a gift, you may write the name of the person you are giving it to and your message.

Let the inks dry before you put on the finishing coat. You may use any decoupage glue or water base sealer like mod podge. Brush these on the entire surface to protect the sign and its contents that you just made. If you do not like to buy this glue, you can DIY one. It only requires mixing polyvinyl acetate or PVA glue with water.

When the glue dries, you can now hang it up on the wall. You need nails and hammer to put it in place. Make sure that the wall is clean and thoroughly wiped out of dusts before doing it. If you do not like to put a hole on your wood, you could opt to use vinyl decal. These are wall stickers you put at the edge of the back surface of your wood. This is a practical way to protect your wood and your wall.

Now that it is already in place, take a few steps back and then appreciate what you did. Find a place across from that and sit down. Relax your muscles from the hard work. You earn that as well as the self fulfillment it brings you.
