Factors In Choosing MMA Mouthguards

By Gregory Fisher

Martial arts is a pretty dangerous contact sport if one does not have the right protection which is why martial artists have so many pieces of armor. One of the most important pieces of armor would be none other than the mouthguard as they protect the teeth from getting hit out in the event of a hook or kick to the head. With that, mouthguards should be carefully chosen before being bought.

Now, the challenge would be choosing the right mouthguard from the choices at the store since there are so many kinds. In order to have an easier time with the choice, one will be needing a buying guide to narrow down the choices and pick the right one. Fortunately, there are just a few factors to consider when making the right pick.

The first factor that one will have to consider would be size and fit. Obviously, the right fit will be the mouthguard that feels most comfortable in the mouth of the wearer. With that said, it is suggested that one have a very tight fit so that one will be comfy even if he or she gets hit.

The thing about size and fit is that a wrong one may do more harm than good during a fight or sparring session. Too tight of a mouthguard may overall lessen the performance due to discomfort which may be pretty dangerous in the long term. If it is too loose though, it may even fall out of the mouth while one is trying to move during the right.

Another thing to consider would be the shock absorber. The shock absorber is extremely important because that is the feature that would actually protect the teeth from much of the impact due to a right cross or a hook punch. In order for the mouthguard to have a nicer shock absorbing feature, it is recommended that one get a bulkier type.

Now the con about having the bulkier type would be the discomfort it may produce when one wears it. For normal sized mouths, it does not really matter but small sized mouths may have a hard time wearing the mouthguard. It is for that very reason why a lot of people just choose to use the custom made and custom sized guards.

The final thing to take into consideration would be the design. This is not such a crucial factor but it does help to have a pretty cool looking mouthguard to bring to the gym. Some of the things to consider are the shape, the color and the design when it comes to picking out the best one.

For those who would want to take up a martial art such as muay thai or boxing, do not forget to buy this piece of equipment. Take note of these factors before buying a mouthguard so that one will be able to protect the teeth from any hit that may come from a fight. With this piece of equipment, one will no longer have to worry too much about getting his or her teeth knocked out.
