How Something You Already Do Can Earn Multiple Charitable Giving

By Jose Kennedy

Have you ever been asked what you would do if you had all of the money in the world? Most commonly, people respond with, "I'd buy a bigger house or travel." This is often followed by, "I'd do more money to charity." People who are charitably inclined usually are living a rich, full life. We all have some affinity to a specific charity we like to support. As a Financial Life Planner, I have come to learn that Multiple charitable Giving is an important goal for most people. Yet most of us don't have a process for funding this goal.

The most typical way to make a charitable donation is by giving money to an organization that helps people in need. The amount you give is entirely up to you, naturally, although there might be some restrictions based on the particular organization.

Most people find that writing a check is the easiest route to go, as long as they have the money, and that makes giving money the most common means of donating. Particularly for people who are not especially interested in how the funds will be utilized, a financial donation saves time and effort that can form a part of other types of donations.

For some individuals, however, a cash donation seems just too impersonal, and they prefer to donate something that will be useful. This is why donating a car to charity has become such a popular choice lately. There is typically a tax break for donating a car, which is another reason for people to sidestep the aggravation of selling their used car. By giving it away instead, they often get the same amount of money in return when they file their taxes.

You can support multiple charities by creating more than one page or changing the default charity in your profile. The average donation is about 4% of the price of purchase. The latest US Census Bureau reports that in 2008, e-commerce retail sales reached $142 billion (I suspect it's more by now). If those purchases were made through the retailers affiliated with Homepage Heroes, they would generate $5.68 billion for charity.

What part do philanthropy and charitable giving play in your value system? Think about causes and organizations you would like to help. Most people that give to charity are happier and healthier. They experience a sense of satisfaction of helping people or specific causes.

The "ultimate gift" - Occasionally a supporter is too insecure to contribute larger sums during their lifetime. By making a contribution with a bequest, the concern about needing the money "someday" is eliminated. If your organization has long-time members and other supporters, including those making gifts of only a few dollars annually, they may fall into this category. They just have to be cultivated and solicited.

More and more of us are using the internet to make charity donations. If you decide to do this, make sure that the website is a secure site. Look for "https" in the domain URL or a lock icon on your browser's status bar.
