Defining A Cypher Entertainment Freestyle Collaboration

By Catherine Allen

Rap is an art form which has been around for decades. While this is the case, the genre has experienced change over the years. One such change is the advent of a Cypher Entertainment Freestyle Collaboration or Cypher battle. In addition, while old school rappers tend to use written lyric sheets or memorization in a performance, most freestyle rappers create material on the fly.

A number of old school rap artists have often defined improvisational rap as a talking performance with no substance or subject. Whereas, more modern freestyle rappers often rap about specific subjects or events. In fact, many perform short raps related to current events and politics.

The genre took on a different aspect in the 1980s when it was referred to as rhyme which was free of style. In many cases, during that time, this improvisational style was considered more bragging about oneself than a musical genre. Although, the same structure of being improvised in the moment and without lyrics or memorization was the same then as now.

In the rap genre as it is known today, there are two types of rap. One is when an artist uses written lyrics or memorization in a performance. While the other, known as freestyle is created on the spot, often without any rhyme, reason or subject. In either case, there can be a DJ spinning background music, recorded sound effects or no background music whatsoever.

In the 1990s, the world placed new definitions on the rap scene which has taken the scene into the public eye. With groups such as Freestyle Fellowship and competitions which focus on lyrics created on the spot. If interested in discovering more about the genre, the Kevin Fitzgerald documentary, "Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme, " might be a great choice for movie night.

The genre is now widely accepted among old school and new artists on the scene. While this is the case, there are others whom still believe rap is rap and improvisational rap is more poetry than song. In fact, it has taken many of those whom now accept freestyle rap as an aspect of the genre a long time to get to the point of doing so.

Many current artists actually learn how to rap by using improvised methods. As such, most turn the art into a rhyming game or conversation in order to practice the improvisational aspects of the style. These methods have a multitude of purposes including therapeutic activities, entertainment and as a way of discovering new and different ideas, spiritual exploration and self-promotion.

When it comes to Cypher oriented rapping, most often the term refers to a series of rap battles or contests. One example of this type event is that of "Drop The Mic, " an American television series featuring celebrities going head to head in a series of rap battles. After which, a winner is declared by the noise ratio of applause for each celebrity by the audience, though there have been a few ties over the course of the program.
