Things A Modeling Agency In Nashville Should And Should Not Ask You To Do

By Christine Allen

If you are a teen who has always dreamed of becoming a model, you would probably jump at the chance to sign with one of the big agencies. It is not unusual for agents to see potential on the street and offer a young boy or girl an invitation up to their offices. A lot of these encounters are ways to entice youngsters into bogus contracts. If you want to know whether a modeling agency in Nashville teens have signed to is legitimate, there are simple ways to do it.

Agencies that expect you to pay money up front should be viewed with a lot of skepticism. It's not customary to pay a signing or handling fee before you get a contract. It can be a temptation when you really want to believe the agency will help you, but it probably won't be worth the price. Real agencies make their money from the fees they charge for your job assignments. The rate is usually around fifteen percent.

You should not be asked to pay for test shots. When you have a contract with an agency, that should be part of their investment in you. Most agencies have good working relationships with photographers and makeup artists. They pay them to get you ready for your test shots. Your responsibility is to show up on time with a good attitude.

If an agent tries to talk you into posing nude or in suggestive lingerie, you need to refuse. Legitimate agencies will not allow young, inexperienced models to do this kind of work. It takes a seasoned professional to pull it off. If you are selected for a clothing catalog shoot, and asked to model bikinis or lingerie, you will have to decide how comfortable you are with the request.

Agencies can legitimately require that you repay a portion, or all, of the money they initially spent establishing you in the market. It is not really common with large agencies, but smaller, local agencies sometimes add this clause into a model's contract. If this is a requirement, it should be pointed out to you at the contract signing.

There are legitimate things agencies will request of their models. You should not take it personally if your agent tells you that you will need to change your appearance. There are a lot of reasons agencies do this. Some agencies only sign young people with a certain look or attitude. They may want you to conform to that image more closely. Certain jobs require certain looks, and you will have to be flexible enough to accommodate the photographers.

You may be excited about the opportunity to travel that modeling jobs will give you. Others are terrified of leaving the place they are used to. If you are going to be a successful model, traveling is going to be one of the job requirements. Agencies have a right to expect you to go where they send you, within reason.

A few models have careers that bring them fame and fortune. The majority of working models are relatively unknown. All of them work for reputable agencies. Boys and girls who sign with unscrupulous agents are headed for big let downs, financially, and emotionally, instead of great careers.
